He covered himself  with the skin, then tried to make the other animals afraid of him. He was a proud  that day and when he saw a fox.

He hoped to surprise  the fox by making a loud lion sound. However, the only sound his mouth could make was his own high and brayed voice.  Animals come up and gave him a sound cudgeling for the fright he had caused. The fox knew this voice which he had heard before, and he said, "I probably would have been afraid if had not already heard your foolish voice."

(The Ass in the Lion's Skin)
A foolish ass once found the skin of a lion which the hunters had forget in the forest.

The fox knew this voice which he had heard before, and he said,
"I probably would have been afraid if had not already heard your foolish voice."

“Those who assume a character not to them generally betray themselves by overacting.”
