Once, an Ant and a Fly were fighting over who was more important.

The Fly said, “Ant! What do you think you are? How can you even think about comparing yourself to me? Look at me! You have to work hard but I pass my time with the rich and the learned.

I fly into the temples and taste the offerings. I can sit on the King’s crown and kiss the Queen’s forehead. I do not work, yet have the best life!”

The Ant replied, “Don’t be so proud! You are always hated when you enter the temples. You are driven away as soon as you sit on the King’s crown or the Queen’s forehead. You do not have anything left for the difficult times as you are lazy.

In winters, you feed yourself on a pile of cow dung. Look at me! I work hard and gather a store of grain for the winter. Later on, when you shiver in the cold, I am safe and at peace in my cosy home. I am prepared to live in any season of the year.”

กาลครั้งหนึ่ง มดกับแมลงวันกำลังโต้แย้งกันว่าฝ่ายไหนมีความสำคัญมากกว่ากัน  แมลงวันพูดว่า "เจ้ามด! เจ้าคิดว่าตัวเจ้าเป็นอะไรงั้นหรือ? ตัวเจ้านั้นคิดจะมาเปรียบเทียบกับข้าได้อย่างไรกัน? มองข้าน่ะเจ้ามด! อันตัวเจ้าต้องทำงานหนักแต่ข้านั้นกลับใช้เวลาไปกับความอุดมสมบูรณ์และการเรียนรู้ ข้าบินเข้าไปในวัดและชิมอาหารที่คนนำมาถวาย  แถมข้ายังสามารถเกาะอยู่บนมงกุฎของพระราชาและจุมพิษที่หน้าผากของพระราชินีได้ ข้าไม่ต้องทำงานแต่ข้าก็ยังมีชีวิตที่ดีที่สุด!"

มดตอบกลับไปว่า "อย่าภูมิใจในตัวเองนักเลยเจ้าแมลงวัน ตัวเจ้านั้นใครๆ ก็รังเกียจ เวลาเจ้าบินเข้าไปในวัด เจ้าถูกปัดไล่ทันทีที่เจ้าเกาะบนมงกุฎของพระราชาและที่หน้าผากของพระราชินี ชีวิตเจ้ามันไม่มีเวลาที่ยากลำบากเพราะเจ้ามันขี้เกียจ  ในฤดูหนาวเจ้ามีชีวิตรอดจากกองขึ้วัว  ดูฉันนี่! ฉันทำงานหนักเพื่อรวบรวมเมล็ดธัญพืชไว้กินในช่วงฤดูหนาว หลังจากนั้นเมื่อใดที่ฉันหนาวสั่นจากอากาศหนาว ฉันก็ปลอดภัยและอยู่อย่างสงบในบ้านอันอบอุ่นของฉัน ฉันเตรียมพร้อมสำหรับการมีชวิตในแต่ละช่วงฤดูต่างๆ ของปี"

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า

A Traveler was about to start on a trip with his Dog. The Dog was standing by the door stretching when the Traveler asked, “Why do you stand there? All is ready; come now.”
The Dog, wagging his tail, replied, “I am ready, it is I who wait for you.”

"The loiterer often blames delay on his more active friend."
