"Won't I ever walk again?" he asked. His family didn't think so.
One day, when he was sitting in his chair looking at the road, a boy that came along stopped to talk to him.
"Do you know the old cemetery, which is down this road?" asked the boy.
"Yes, I do," said the old man. "People say that the Devil and the Lord are there.

"Do you believe it?" "Perhaps yes and perhaps no," answered the old man.
"Nobody will go there at night. Everybody I know is afraid. Nobody will go there on a dark night, or on a clear one, either. Aren't you afraid, too?"
"I'm not afraid," said the old man, "but I can't walk so far." The boy became excited.
"Will you go there with me?" he asked. "I'll carry you on my back."
"Of course I'll go," said the old man. They planned on going that same night.

When the boy picked up the old man, he found that he was very heavy, so he soon put him down on the road.
"Aren't you going to carry me all the way? Asked the old man. "I can't walk, you know."
So the boy picked him up again and started on.

"I'll take this one; he can have that one," but it was too dark to see anyone. The thief heard the boy and thought it was his friend with the sheep.
"Is he fat?" he yelled.

"Fat or thin, you can have him!" Then he turned around and ran as fast as he could run. He stopped running when he came to the old man's house. There was a light on the porch, and he saw the old man, sitting in his chair, smoking a cigar!
"Why are you so slow?" called the old man. That old man never had rheumatism again. He was cured. And the boy never went to the cemetery again, day or night.

Once there was a sick old man who had rheumatism and couldn't walk. He hadn't walk for ten years. All day he sat in front of his house and thought about his rheumatism. At night his family carried him to bed. "Won't I ever walk again?" he asked. His family didn't think so.
กาลครั้งหนึ่ง มีชายชราคนหนึ่งป่วยด้วยโรคปวดข้อ และ เดินไม่ได้ เขาไม่ได้เดินมานานเป็นเวลาสิบปี วันทั้งวัน เขาจะนั่งอยู่ที่หน้าบ้าน และ คิดถึงแต่เรื่องโรคปวดข้อของตัวเอง ในเวลากลางคืน คนในครอบครัวจะช่วยกันยกเขาขึ้นเตียง "ฉันจะเดินไม่ได้ตลอดไปแล้วหรือ?" เป็นคำถามของเขาที่คนในครอบครัวไม่คิดว่าจะเป็นอย่างนั้น

เขาเล่ากันว่า ปีศาจกับพระเจ้าจะแบ่งวิญญาณกัน ลุงเชื่อไหม?" เด็กชายถาม "บางครั้งก็เชื่อ บางครั้งก็ไม่เชื่อ!" ชายชราตอบ "ไม่มีใครคิดจะไปที่นั่นตอนกลางคืน ทุก ๆ คนที่ผมรู้จัก กลัว กันทั้งนั้น ไม่มีใครไปที่นั่นในคืนที่มืดสนิท หรือแม้แต่คืนที่มีแสงสว่าง ก็ไม่อยากไป ลุงไม่กลัวกับเขาบ้างเหรอ?"
"I'm not afraid," said the old man, "but I can't walk so far." The boy became excited. "Will you go there with me?" he asked. "I'll carry you on my back." "Of course I'll go," said the old man. They planned on going that same night.
"ฉันไม่กลัว แต่ฉันเดินไม่ได้" ชายแก่ตอบ เด็กชายรู้สึกตื่นเต้น "ลุงจะไปกับผมไหมหล่ะ? ผมจะให้ลุงขี่หลังผมไป" "ฉันจะไปแน่นอน!" ชายชราตอบ พวกเขาวางแผนที่จะไปในคืนวันนั้น
That day two thieves came to town. They usually stole together. This time the first one planned to steal a sheep, and the second planned to steal some ears of corn. They decided to meet at night in the cemetery. When the thief with the corn went to the cemetery, his friend wasn't there. The thief put the corn on the ground and began to divide the ears.
วันนั้นมี ขโมยสองคนเข้ามาในหมู่บ้าน ปกติสองคนนี้จะร่วมกันขโมย แต่คราวนี้ ขโมยคนแรก วางแผนขโมยแกะ 1 ตัว ขโมยอีกคนหนึ่งจะ ขโมยฝักข้าวโพด หัวขโมยทั้งสองตัดสินใจไปเจอกันที่ป่าช้า ในตอนกลางคืน เมื่อเจ้าขโมยคนที่ขโมยฝักข้าวโพดมาถึงป่าช้า ขโมยอีกคนหนึ่งยังมาไม่ถึง เขาเทข้าวโพดลงบนพื้น แล้วเริ่มแบ่งฝักข้าวโพด

"ฉันเอาฝักนี้, เขาเอาฝักนั้น ฉันจะเอาฝักนี้, แกเอาฝักนั้นไป" เมื่อเด็กชายมารับชายแก่ เขาก็พบว่าชายแก่หนักมากๆ ให้ขี่หลังเดินมาได้ไม่นานก็ต้องปล่อยชายแก่ลงบนถนน ชายชราจึงเอ๋ยถามว่า "พ่อหนุ่มจะไม่แบกฉันไปจนถึงที่หรอกหรือ? เธอก็รู้ว่าฉันเดินไม่ได้" เด็กชายจึงต้องแบกชายแก่อีกครั้งแล้วเริ่มเดินต่อ
After a time the boy came along with the old man on his back. They heard the thief say, "I'll take this one; he can have that one," but it was too dark to see anyone. The thief heard the boy and thought it was his friend with the sheep. "Is he fat?" he yelled.
เวลาผ่านไป เด็กชายที่มีชายแก่อยู่บนหลังก็มาถึงป่าช้า ทั้งสองได้ยินเสียงหัวขโมยพูดว่า "ฉันจะเอาอันนี้, แกเอาอันนั้น" แต่สภาพมันมืดมากเกินกว่าที่จะเห็นใคร ๆ ได้ เจ้าขโมยได้ยินเสียงคนเดินมา ก็นึกว่าเป็นเพื่อนหัวขโมยที่นำแกะมาถึงแล้ว จึงตะโกนถามว่า "มันอ้วนไหม?"
The boy's hair stood up on his head. He threw the old man to the ground and said, "Fat or thin, you can have him!" Then he turned around and ran as fast as he could run. He stopped running when he came to the old man's house. There was a light on the porch, and he saw the old man, sitting in his chair, smoking a cigar!
เด็กชายขนหัวลุกตั้ง โยนชายแก่ลงพื้นแล้วพูดว่า "อ้วน หรือ ผอม แกก็เอาเขาไปเถอะ!" แล้วหมุนตัวกลับ วิ่งออกไปด้วยความเร็วเท่าที่จะวิ่งได้ เด็กชายหยุดวิ่งเมื่อมาถึงบ้านของชายแก่ มีแสงไฟที่ระเบียงบ้าน และเขาเห็น ชายแก่นั่งอยู่บนเก้าอี้ สูบบุหรี่
"Why are you so slow?" called the old man. That old man never had rheumatism again. He was cured. And the boy never went to the cemetery again, day or night.
"ทำไมพ่อหนุ่มถึงมาช้านักล่ะ?" ชายชราถาม ชายชราไม่รู้สึกปวดข้ออีกต่อไป เขาถูกรักษาจนหายแล้ว และเด็กชายก็ไม่เคยไปที่ป่าช้าอีกเลย ไม่ว่าจะในตอนกลางวัน หรือ กลางคืน
