A dog left his master’s house after being forced to starve for several days. On the way, he met a kind sparrow who offered him food and shelter.

A while later, a driver came down the road pulling his horse-drawn wagon and demanded that the dog be removed. The sparrow refused to wake his friend and asked the driver to take another route. Angry, the driver wheeled his wagon over the dog’s body and killed him.

The sparrow was grief-stricken. He leaked the barrels of wine in the wagon and pecked out the horse’s eyes. In anger, the driver lashed his whip at the sparrow and it flew away.When the driver reached home, his wife dragged him to the rooftop and showed him thousands of birds, which were pecking at their corn. In their midst was the sparrow, who was laughing, seeing the mess. “What sorrow has struck me,” cried out the man. “Not yet,” replied the sparrow.

Mad with anger, the man caught the sparrow and put it in his mouth. The sparrow struggled and screamed, “This will cost you your life.” The man’s wife grabbed a knife and struck at the sparrow. The sparrow escaped in time and the man was killed instead.

สุนัขตัวหนึ่งเดินออกจากบ้านเจ้าของของมัน หลังจากที่ถูกทิ้งให้อดอาหารอยู่หลายวัน ระหว่างทาง มันได้พบกับนกกระจอกแสนดีตัวหนึ่ง นกกระจอกหาอาหารและที่พักให้แก่เจ้าสุนัข พวกมันกลายมาเป็นเพื่อนที่ดีต่อกัน  อีกทั้งนกกระจอกยังเสี่ยงชีวิตตัวเองเพื่อขโมยชิ้นเนื้อและขนมปังให้สุนัข สุนัขต้องการนอนพัก และก็หลับอยู่บนถนนข้างหนึ่ง ในขณะนั้นนกกระจอกก็คอยเฝ้ายามให้กับเพื่อนของมัน

ต่อมาไม่นาน มีคนขับรถม้าบรรทุกผ่านมาบนถนนเส้นนั้น และสั่งให้สุนัขหลบออกไป นกกระจอกปฏิเสธที่จะปลุกสุนัข และบอกให้คนขับไปใช้ทางอีกข้างหนึ่ง เมื่อคนขับได้ยินเช่นนั้นจึงโกรธมาก เขาบังคับให้ล้อรถบรรทุกของเขาพุ่งตรงไปยังสุนัขที่กำลังนอนอยู่และเหยียบทับร่างสุนัขจนตาย

นกกระจอกรู้สึกเศร้าใจมาก มันจึงไปทำให้ถังไวท์ที่อยู่บนรถบรรทุกรั่ว และจิกไปที่ตาของม้า  คนขับรถโมโหมากจึงหวดแส้ของเขาไปที่นกกระจอกแต่เจ้านกกระจอกก็บินหลบได้

เมื่อเขากลับมาถึงบ้าน ภรรยาของเขาจูงมือเขาขึ้นไปยังห้องใต้หลังคาเพื่อให้สามีได้ดูนกจำนวนหลายตัวที่กำลังจิกกินข้าวโพด  มีนกกระจอกตัวนั้นกำลังหัวเราะอยู่ตรงกลางกลุ่มนกนั้น  เขาเห็นสภาพรกรุงรังจึงร้องออกมาว่า "ทำไมข้าต้องมาเจอเรื่องโชคร้ายอะไรแบบนี้"  นกกระจอกตอบว่า "ยังจ้า ยัง.."

ความบ้าคลั่งจากความโกรธ ทำให้ชายคนนั้นจับนกกระจอกและเอามันเข้าปาก นกกระจอกติดอยู่ในปากและกรีดร้องออกมา "นี่เป็นราคาที่เจ้าต้องจ่ายด้วยชีวิตของเจ้า" ภรรยาของเขาหยิบมีดและแทงไปยังนกกระจอก รกกระจอกหนีไปได้ในตอนนั้นและสามีของเธอกลายมาเป็นผู้ที่ถูกฆ่าแทน
