FOX swimming across a rapid river was carried by the force of the current into
a very deep ravine, where he lay for a long time very much bruised, sick, and
unable to move. A swarm of hungry blood-sucking flies settled upon him.

Hedgehog, passing by, saw his anguish and inquired if he should drive away the
flies that were tormenting him. “By no means,” replied the Fox; “pray do not
molest them.” “How is this?’ said the Hedgehog; “do you not want to be rid of
them?’ “No,” returned the Fox, “for these flies which you see are full of blood,
and sting me but little, and if you rid me of these which are already satiated,
others more hungry will come in this place, and will drink up all the blood I
have left.”

สุนัขจิ้งจอกตัวหนึ่งซึ่งกำลังว่ายน้ำข้ามแม่น้ำที่ไหลเชี่ยวกราด โดนกระแสน้ำพัดพาลงไปสู่หุบเหวลึก
โดยที่มันได้ติดยู่ ณ. ที่แห่งนั้นเป็นเวลานาน
สภาพตามเนื้อตัวมีรอยฟกช้ำจำนวนมาก อีกทั้งยังป่วย และไม่สามารถขยับเขยื้อนตัวไปไหนได้ แถมยังมีฝูงแมลงดูดเลือดที่หิวโหยฝูงหนึ่งบินอยู่บริเวณเหนือหัวของเขา

เม่นตัวหนึ่งเดินผ่านมา เห็นความทุกข์ทรมานของสุนัขจิ้งจอกตัวนี้ จึงได้บอกเจ้าสุนัขจิ้งจอกว่ามันควรไล่แมลงที่กำลังบินรบกวนอยู่นี้ออกไป
“By

“ไม่มีทาง” สุนัขจิ้งจอกตอบ เม่นจึงกล่าวว่า “คำขอนั้นไม่ได้รบกวนพวกแมลงเหล่านั้นเลย”
“แล้วนี่เป็นไงบ้างล่ะ” “เจ้าไม่ต้องการกำจัดพวกมันอย่างนั้นหรือ” สุนัขจิ้งจอกตอบว่า “ไม่” “แมลงพวกนี้ที่เจ้าเห็นว่ามันกินเลือดจนอิ่ม
และกัดข้านั้นมันช่างเป็นเรื่องเล็กน้อยนัก และหากเจ้ากำจัดแมลงพวกนี้ออกไปจากตัวข้า สัตว์อื่น ๆ ที่หิวโหยมากกว่าก็จะมายังที่แห่งนี้และดื่มกินเลือดที่เหลืออยู่ในตัวข้าจนหมดสิ้น
