Once upon a time in a palace, there lived a brave and handsome prince.
นานมาแล้ว มีเจ้าชายผู้กล้าหาญ และสง่างามพระองค์หนึ่งประทับอยู่ในวังแห่งหนึ่ง
The prince loved the cat that he kept. He loved it so much that he did not want to marry any princess.
เจ้าชายทรงโปรดปรานแมวที่เลี้ยงไว้ จนไม่ปรารถนาที่จะอภิเษกกับเจ้าหญิงองค์ใด
The cat fell deeply in love with the prince. The cat could not eat or sleep as she loved the prince very much but could not marry him because she was a cat.
ส่วนแมวตัวนั้นก็หลงรักเจ้าชายจนไม่เป็นอันกินอันนอน เพราะมันรู้ว่าไม่อาจสมหวังในความรักนี้ได้
The cat kept crying and crying. One day, an angle of love appeared.
เจ้าแมวเฝ้าแต่ร้องคร่ำครวญ จนวันหนึ่งนางฟ้าแห่งความรัก ได้ปรากฏกายขึ้น
“Poor cat. What happened to you?” asked the angle. “I love the prince very much but it is hopeless. I am just only a cat,” the cat replied.
“เจ้าแมวที่น่าสงสาร มีอะไรเกิดขึ้นหรือ?” นางฟ้าถาม “ข้ารักเจ้าชายมากแต่ต้องสิ้นหวัง เพราะข้าเป็นแค่แมวตัวหนึ่งเท่านั้น” มันตอบ
The angle felt very sorry for the cat and said to her, “I will change you into a very pretty princess but you have to change your whole nature.”
นางฟ้าสงสารจึงบอกว่า “ข้าจะทำให้เจ้ากลายเป็นเจ้าหญิงแสนสวย แต่เจ้าจะต้องละทิ้งสัญชาตญาณเดิมให้ได้ทั้งหมด”
“I will not show any signs that I am a cat,” promised the cat.
“ข้าจะไม่มีวันแสดงให้ใครรู้ว่าข้าเคยเป็นแมวมาก่อน” แมวให้สัญญา
“Good! You have to keep your promise, otherwise you will turn back into a cat again.”, the angle warned.
“ดี! เจ้าต้องทำตามสัญญาให้ได้ มิฉะนั้นร่างของเจ้าจะกลับกลายไปเป็นแมวตามเดิม” นางฟ้าย้ำ
The cat promised. The angle cast a spell. Suddenly the cat turned into a lovely princess.
เมื่อแมวรับคำ นางฟ้าก็ร่ายเวทมนตร์ ทันใดร่างของแมวนั้นก็กลายเป็นเจ้าหญิงที่สวยงาม
When the prince met the princess, he at once fell in love with the princess and asked her to marry him.
เมื่อเจ้าชายได้พบกับเจ้าหญิงที่แปลงร่างมาจากแมว ก็ทรงตกหลุมรักและขอแต่งงานด้วยในทันที
As time went by, the princess could not hide her real nature.
เวลาผ่านไป เจ้าหญิงไม่อาจละทิ้งสัญชาตญาณเดิมของเธอได้
At first, the prince was very surprised when he saw the princess scratching a chair with her nails.
ครั้งแรกเจ้าชายทรงแปลกใจ เมื่อเห็นเจ้าหญิงใช้เล็บข่วนที่ประทับจนขาดวิ่น
Later, he saw her climbing the wall of the palace.
ต่อมาเจ้าชายทรงเห็นเธอปีนป่ายเล่นบนกำแพงวัง
One day, the prince was surprised when he saw the princess holding a rat in her mouth and then eating it.
จนในวันหนึ่ง เจ้าชายก็ทรงตกพระทัยมาก เมื่อเห็นเธอคาบหนูไว้ในปาก แล้วกินมันเข้าไป
Before he could say anything to her, princess suddenly turned into a cat because she broke her promise.
และยังไม่ทันที่เจ้าชายจะตรัสอะไร ร่างของเจ้าหญิงก็พลันกลับกลายไปเป็นแมวตามเดิม เพราะมันไม่อาจละทิ้งความเป็นแมวตามที่เคยให้สัญญาไว้ได้
นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า

“พื้นเพและเบื้องหลังที่เป็นจริง ไม่ใช่สิ่งที่จะปกปิดกันได้ง่าย ๆ ”
