A certain house was overrun with mice. A cat, discovering this, made her way into it and began to catch and eat them one by one. Fearing for their lives, the mice kept themselves close in their holes. The cat was no longer able to get at them and perceived that she must tempt them forth by some device.

For this purpose she jumped on a peg, and suspending herself from it, pretended to be dead. One of the mice, peeping stealthily out, saw her and said, "Ah, my good madam, even though you should turn into a meal-bag, we will not come near you."                                   
                                         
                                        “Avoid even appearances of danger.”

บ้านหลังหนึ่งมีหนูชุกชุมมาก เจ้าของบ้านจึงนำแมวมาเลี้ยงไว้ เจ้าแมวขยันไล่จับหนูกินทุกวันจนลดจำนวนลงไปทีละตัว ๆ

ด้วยความกลัวว่าจะถูกกินเป็นรายต่อไป พวกหนูจึงพากันเก็บตัวเงียบไม่ออกมาจากรูที่พวกมันอาศัยอยู่

แมวเฝ้ารอจับหนูอยู่หลายวันแต่ไม่เห็นหนูวิ่งเพ่นพ่านก็แปลกใจ จึงวางแผนแกล้งนอนนิ่ง ๆ ซ่อนเล็บแหลมคมไว้มิดชิด ทำทีว่าตายเป็นซากไร้วิญญาณให้พวกหนูตายใจจะได้ออกจากที่ซ่อนแล้วจับกิน

"Ah, my good madam, even though you should turn into a meal-bag, we will not come near you."

หนูตัวหนึ่งเมื่อเห็นเช่นนั้นจึงร้องออกมาว่า “เฮ้อ, คุณผู้หญิงผู้แสนดี แม้ว่าท่านจะเข้าไปอยู่ในถุงอาหารก็เถอะ พวกเราก็จะไม่มีวันเข้าไปใกล้ตัวเจ้าเด็ดขาด”

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า
