Once upon a time a Wolf was lapping at a stream. When he looked up, he saw a Lamb drinking a little lower down. "There’s my supper,” he thought, “I will find some excuse to catch it.” Then he called out to the Lamb, “How dare you muddle the water?” “No, master,” said Lamb, “I cannot muddle your water because it runs down from you to me.” Well, then,” said the Wolf, “Why did you call me bad names this time last year?” “It was impossible,” said the Lamb, “I am only six months old.” “I don’t care,” shouted the Wolf, “If it was not you, it must be your father.” After that he rushed at the poor little Lamb and ate it up.

กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว มีหมาป่าตัวหนึ่งกำลังแลบลิ้นกินน้ำอยู่ที่ลำธาร
When he looked up, he saw a Lamb drinking a little lower down.
เมื่อมันเงยหน้าขึ้น เจ้าหมาป่ามองเห็นลูกแกะตัวหนึ่งกำลังดื่มน้ำเช่นกันห่างจากมันต่ำลงไป
“There’s my supper,” he thought,
“นี่คืออาหารมื้อเย็นของข้า” หมาป่าคิด
“I will find some excuse to catch it.”
ข้าจะหาข้ออ้างบางอย่างเพื่อจับเจ้าลูกแกะตัวมากินนั้นให้ได้
Then he called out to the Lamb, “How dare you muddle the water?”
จากนั้นเจ้าหมาป่าจึงร้องตะโกนไปยังลูกแกะว่า “เจ้ากล้าดียังไงถึงได้มากวนน้ำ”
“No, master,” said Lamb,
“เปล่าน่ะ หนูเปล่ากวนน้ำ, นาย ” ลูกแกะตอบ
“I cannot muddle your water because it runs down from you to me.”
“หนูไม่สามารถกวนน้ำของท่านได้หรอกเพราะน้ำมันไหลจากตำแหน่งของท่านลงมายังตำแหน่งที่หนูอยู่”
“Well, then,” said the Wolf, “Why did you call me bad names this time last year?”
“เอ่อ ถ้าอย่างนั้น” หมาป่าพูด “แล้ววันนี้เมื่อปีกลายเจ้าด่าว่าข้าทำไม”

“มันเป็นไปไม่ได้หรอกท่าน” ลูกแกะแย้งขึ้น “หนูเพิ่งจะอายุ 6 เดือนเท่านั้น”

“ข้าไม่สนใจหรอก” หมาป่าตะหวาด “ถ้าไม่ใช่เจ้า มันก็ต้องเป็นพ่อของเจ้านั่นแหล่ะ” จากนั้นมันก็วิ่งเข้าตะครุบลูกแกะน้อยผู้น่าสงสารตัวนั้นและกินมันเป็นอาหาร
นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า
